How to Care for Your Fine Jewelry
Share
Fine jewelry is made to be worn and loved — but a little care goes a long way in keeping it looking as beautiful as the day it arrived. Whether it's an 18K gold piece or one set with diamonds, here's how to keep it in its best condition.
Store it properly
Keep each piece separate — in a soft pouch or a lined jewelry box — so gold and gemstones don't scratch against each other or against harder metals. Humidity and direct sunlight can dull finishes over time, so a cool, dry drawer is ideal.
Put it on last, take it off first
Perfume, lotion, and hairspray can dull gold's shine and cloud gemstones. Apply these first, then put your jewelry on as the finishing touch. Before swimming, showering, cleaning, or exercising, take it off — chlorine and harsh chemicals are especially hard on fine metals.
Clean it gently
A soft, lint-free cloth is usually enough for a quick polish. For a deeper clean, warm water with a drop of mild, fragrance-free soap and a soft brush (like a clean, soft toothbrush) works well for most gold and diamond pieces — just rinse thoroughly and dry completely before storing. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and harsh chemicals unless you know they're safe for the specific stones in your piece.
Check the settings
Every so often, take a moment to look closely at prongs and clasps, especially on pieces you wear often. Catching a loose stone or a worn clasp early means a simple fix instead of a lost piece.
